Loading a theme into your Drupal CMS System

  1. First download your chosen theme(s) to your local computer from either our website or drupal.org. Most themes will be provided in a 'zip file' format so you will need a piece of software like winzip or 7-zip to extract the files.
  2. You now need to open your preferred FTP Client. If you not sure what this is or have not set it up to your hosting account, please visit our "File Management" section of the knowledgebase for further advice.
  3. Once you have logged into your hosting account with your FTP client you will be directed to the "root folder" [think of this as the starting point]. Scroll down to you see a folder called "public_html". Click on this to open this folder.
  4. Scroll down the page and click on the file called "site". Within this folder you should have two sub-folders called "All" and "Default", Click on "All".
  5. We recommend that you create two new sub-folders in this area so that any updates to Drupal should not effect your themes or modules.
  6. Using your FTP client create a new folder and call it "themes".
  7. Using your FTP client reate a new folder and call it "modules"
  8. Now select your new themes folder.
  9. On the local computer side of your FTP program, locate the extracted theme and its files that you wish to upload. These files are normally under their own sub-folder.
  10. Select the folderand then press on the "upload" or "transfer" option to copy the files to the server. Depending on how big the files and the speed of your connection this could take a minute or two!
  11. Once the upload is complete you can go back to your Drupal website and see the theme under the settings section.
